- French Model 1774 Charleville Musket
French Model 1774 Charleville Musket with Two Scarce U.S. Bands .69 cal. 39.6"?barrel length with an undisturbed brown patina; overall length 55 inches. This musket has been reduced from its original barrel length of 44.4" ?but retains its original though repositioned front double barrel band with spring. No barrel markings are visible due to wear. The cock is a period replacement retaining its original undisturbed flint with leather cushion between the cock jaws and may be an earlier Tulle (cM1728) cock but this is not confirmed. Face of lockplate marked Charleville. The sear may have been a period replacement but if so it is a very old repair. The reconfigured shortening of this piece appears to have been performed in an arsenal/armory setting as all parts have been preserved and a bayonet lug placed at the muzzle all very well executed. The stock is branded along its lower edge between the butt plate and the rear trigger guard finial with the full United States brand (the last S worn off); and along the lower edge of the stock forward the rear barrel band U States (some lower letter wear but completely legible). This musket came out of a house attic in Poughkeepsie New York. Condition: The tang screw head only is missing both sling swivels are missing and the lower barrel band ram rod spring assembly is missing; the stock has an overall untouched finish. Musket shows normal denting a few scratches some period carving and general period use but overall in good and solid condition. The old ram rod has been twisted into a corkscrew at its end to facilitate ball or patch removal.
